With Nitin Menon given the opportunity to officiate in the renowned Ashes in England in June and July, he will finally achieve his “dream” of being the sole Indian representative in the ICC elite group of umpires.
The third and fourth Tests of the prestigious series between England and Australia beginning June 16 will be officiated by the on-field referee from Indore. From July 6 to 10, the third Test will be held in Leeds, and the fourth Test will be held in Manchester. (July 19-23). From July 27 to July 31, Menon will serve as the TV judge for the Oval Test in London which is the final Test of the series as well.
One of the senior Indian cricket board officials told the Press Trust of India that, “”He will be officiating in the Ashes.” Joel Wilson from Trinidad and Kumar Dharmasena from Sri Lanka will be his colleagues on the pitch in Leeds and Manchester, respectively. Menon, who joined the elite panel in 2020, might have presided over an Ashes match sooner if it weren’t for COVID, as the ICC was compelled to employ local umpires at the time due to the restrictions in place at the time.
Menon has presided over 18 Tests, 42 ODIs, and 40 T20s so far. He is occupied right now with the Indian T20 League. The selection of neutral judges for the Ashes suggests that the ICC intends to reinstate the pre-COVID rule in all Test matches.
When Nitin Menon was inducted into the elite panel of umpires, the official spoke about his dream series that he wanted to be a part of. He said, “My dream series will be Ashes without a doubt. That is the only series I watch on TV. The atmosphere, the way the series is fought, is something I want to be involved in. Whether in England or Australia I would love to be part of it.”
