‘Kya badiya close match tha ye’ – Fans heap praise on Lucknow Super Giants for defending just154 against Rajasthan Royals in away fixture

Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants, who are the two teams leading the Indian Premier League standings, locked horns in the IPL 2023 clash. A win for Rajasthan would have made them clear of the second position by 4 points which could have been crucial in a long tournament.

Rajasthan Royals won the toss on a slow track and opted to field first hoping for dew while they chased the Lucknow total. Rajasthan bowlers gave their everything to get a wicket and were economical too in the powerplay, but were unable to scalp the wicket. KL Rahul was dropped twice in the first six overs, and he, along with Kyle Mayers, survived a tricky period and then looked for boundaries post the powerplay.

In his four overs, Ashwin took two wickets and allowed 23 runs while Boult allowed 16 runs and took one wicket. Even though Kyle Mayers achieved a half-century, it happened rather slowly. No other batter was able to make a significant contribution with the bat. The hosts were able to hold them to 154/7 thanks to the effective bowling of R Ashwin as well as Trent Boult.

How did the chase by Rajasthan pan out?

In their chase today in Jaipur, Rajasthan Royals got off to a fast start against Lucknow Super Giants, thanks to Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Before Marcus Stoinis dismissed Yashasvi for 44(35), the pair had accumulated 87 runs over the first wicket. In the following over, as Devdutt Padikkal entered the batter’s box, Sanju Samson was needlessly run out for 2.

Butler also lost his wicket soon which brought Lucknow back into the game. The Lucknow bowlers were using the slower ball effectively and were trying to put pressure on the Rajasthan batters. Shimron Hetmeyer also departed soon for a low score and Rajasthan looked in trouble.

Devdutt Padikkal played some great shots in the 18th over to bring the equation down to 28 out of the final two overs. Avesh Khan started the final over with 20 runs in the bank to defend. He kept his cool as he took two wickets and won his team the game by 10 runs
