Punjab Kings (PBKS) broke the winning streak of Mumbai Indians (MI) as they defeated the five-time champions by 13 runs in a high-scoring thriller at the Wankhede Stadium in Match 31 of IPL 2023 on Saturday. Batting first, PBKS posted a big total of 214 for the loss of 8 wickets. In reply, MI gave a tough fight chasing a big total but could only reach 201 runs losing 6 wickets.

PBKS lost their first in the form of Matthew Short at a score of 18 in 2.3 overs. After that, Prabhsimran Singh (26 off 17) and Atharva Taide (29 off 17) took the innings further by adding 47 runs for the second wicket. After the partnership was broken, PBKS lose another couple of wickets in the short interval as the score was reduced to 83 for 4. After that, stand-in skipper Sam Curran and Harpreet Singh Bhatia took charge of the innings as they put up a partnership of fifth wicket.

Harpreet got out after scoring 41 off 28 with four fours and two sixes. While Curran went on to score a half-century and got out after a well-made 55 runs off 29 balls hitting five fours and four sixes. In the end, Jitesh Sharma played a blistering cameo by smashing 25 off 7 hitting four sixes as PBKS crossed 210 runs. For MI, Cameron Green and Piyush Chawla scalped 2-2 wickets, while Arjun Tendulkar, Jofra Archer, and Jason Behrendorff shared a wicket each.

Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green’s partnership put MI in the game

Chasing the winning total, MI didn’t had a great start as they lost Ishan Kishan in the second over of the innings. After that, skipper Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green added 76 runs for the second wicket. Rohit got out after scoring 44 off 27 with four fours and three sixes. After that, Green and Suryakumar Yadav took charge of the innings and put up a partnership of 75 runs for the third wicket. Green got out after scoring 67 runs off 43 balls with six fours and three sixes, while Suryakumar scored 57 off 26 hitting seven fours and three sixes.

The match went down to the last over with 16 runs remaining. After that, Arshdeep Singh took a couple of wickets and took the game away from the home team. Tim David remained unbeaten on 25 off 13 balls but couldn’t take his team down the line. For PBKS, Arshdeep took 4 wickets in his four overs conceding 29 runs, while, Liam Livingstone and Nathan Ellis shared a wicket each.
