‘Usko bas indian fans ki engagement chahiye’ – Fans react as John Cena tweets after MS Dhoni copies his iconic gesture to turn down DRS request
At the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, MS Dhoni copied John Cena’s iconic gesture, ‘U Can’t See Me’ to turn down a DRS request from his bowler. It happened during IPL 2023 clash between Lucknow Super Giants (LSH) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Since the famous Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir altercation, the LSG has resumed play. Dhoni made sure to deflect attention from the incident by first making a major announcement about his IPL future and then taking the spotlight by imitating Super Cena’s famous move.
The interest in WWE among Indian cricketers is nothing new. The most aggressive of the bunch, Virat Kohli frequently uses catchphrases during games. Another young person who seems to be rather fascinated by the WWE is Venkatesh Iyer of KKR, as seen by his social media pages. Even the WWE has been outspoken about how much it supports Indian cricket. When Mumbai Indians won the IPL championship for a fifth time in 2020, they gave them a specially created championship belt. They also recently wished Sachin Tendulkar a happy 50th birthday with the help of the legendary Triple H.
You can’t see me – The most popular and common gestures for almost two decades
While keeping wicket, Dhoni maintained a close connection between Indian cricket and WWE. Maheesh Theekshana struck Manan Vohra, the LSG opener, on the pads during the sixth over. The CSK spinner said the decision was closer than many anticipated after a massive appeal was made but umpire Anil Choudhary refused to be convinced. He then turned to Dhoni because, well, who else would be better to take the DRS, but this time, the CSK skipper wasn’t quite persuaded and told Theekshana that as well.
Cena’s catchphrase, “You can’t see me,” has been associated with his 21-year WWE career. In 2002, Cena started using his “Doctor of Thuganomics” character. It continues to be one of the most popular and common gestures two decades later as John Cena effectively inspired an entire generation for wrestling fans. It has even been the subject of several jokes and the focal point of countless memes.
Here’s how fans reacted on John Cena’s tweet:
