Racist term used for Pakistan on TV scorecard during their tour match vs Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra

It is absolutely prohibited for there to exist any form of ethnic or racial bias in sports, including the misuse of language based on racial backgrounds in any kind of sports. However, the Prime Minister XI warm-up game between Australia and Pakistan reportedly featured a shocking occurrence that took place at Canberra’s Manuka Oval on December 7.

Notably, the incident shows the critical need for improved sensitivity and awareness in the sports world especially in cricket after the incident that sparked the major controversy.

Speaking about the incident here, the game’s scoreboard ticker accidentally referred to Pakistan’s team as “P**I” instead of the usual word “PAK” on the first day of the play, resulting in a troubling occurrence that gained worldwide attention. The clip of the scoreboard has gone viral with unpleasant comments from the fans. Notably, “P**I” is seen as a mocking slur used towards people of South Asian heritage; thus, critics were immediately drawn to this incident, which expressed concerns.

However, after this incident, Cricket Australia took to social media and admitted their blunder during the game. In addition, Cricket Australia was regretting after they learned of their mistake.

A clarifier on this from Cricket Australia: “The graphic was an automatic feed from a data provider which had not been used previously for a Pakistan game. This was regrettable, and the error we corrected manually as soon as it came to light.”

Speaking about the game here, the Men in Green posted 391/9 before declaring their innings. Notably, Test skipper Shan Masood played a fantastic innings of unbeaten 201 runs. In addition, star batters Sarfaraz Ahmed and Babar Azam also played great knocks, which allowed them to post a respectable total against the hosts.
