In the 49th match of the Indian Premier League 2023, Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets. In the low-scoring encounter, CSK chased 140 runs in 17.5 overs as Devon Conway, Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad played some vital innings.
Earlier, after winning the toss, CSK skipper MS Dhoni considering overcast conditions opted to bowl first. His decision went well with the team as visitors could not play pacers in the powerplay. The new opening pair of Camron Green and Ishan Kishan didn’t work for MI as both were dismissed in cheap for just 13 runs on board. After their departure, skipper Rohit Sharma also threw his wicket as he was dismissed by Deepak Chahar for a three-ball duck.
However, after that Suryakumar Yadav, along with Nehal Wadhera, added 55 runs for the fourth wicket. Surya, in his innings, scored 26 runs off 22 balls with the help of three boundaries. On the other hand, Wadhera scored his maiden IPL half-century. He hammered 64 runs off 51 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a maximum. Both were dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirna, respectively.
In the end, Tristan Stubbs tried to hit some boundaries to take MI to a respectable total. He scored 20 runs off 21 balls with the help of two boundaries. For CSK, Pathirna proved to be a go-to bowler as he clinched three wickets, while Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande clinched two wickets each. Jadeja also got a wicket as he dismissed Suryakumar Yadav.
Conway-Dube led CSK to a comfortable victory
Chasing 140 against a weak bowling line-up of Mumbai Indians was an easy task for the hosts. Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway added 46 runs in 4.1 overs. Gaikwad scored 30 runs off 16 balls with the help of four boundaries and two sixes. He was dismissed by ace spinner Piyush Chawla. After his departure, Ajinkya Rahane joined Conway in the middle. Both added 35 runs for the second wicket before Chawla dismissed Rahane.
Rahane, in his innings, scored 21 runs off 17 balls with the help of a boundary and as many sixes. After that, Ambati Raydu and Conway added 24 runs for the third wicket before getting dismissed by Stubbs. He scored 12 runs off 11 balls with the help of a six. In the end, Shivam Dube and Conway added 25 runs for the fourth wicket. Conway, in his innings, scored 44 runs off 42 balls with the help of four boundaries. Meanwhile, Dube hit 26 runs off 18 balls with the help of three sixes.
