‘I don’t know where commonsense had gone…..’ – Angelo Mathews lashes out at Bangladesh team after his ‘timed out’ dismissal snowballed into major controversy

The Sri Lanka Cricket Team suffered a three-wicket loss over Bangladesh in their eighth game of the ODI World Cup 2023 on November 6 at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. However, following the loss, Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Matthews called Bangladesh’s decision to dismiss him by ‘time out’ a total disgrace and disrespect of him and his side.

Notably, the 36-year-old cricketer becomes the first cricketer to be dismissed via timeout. The great middle-order batsman reveals that he didn’t do anything wrong. Moreover, the right-handed batsman feels it was an equipment failure for which Bangladesh skipper Shakib-Al-Hasan appealed for time out. The Colombo-born cricketer feels Shakib should have used a little common sense.

“I haven’t done anything wrong. I had two minutes to get ready which I did but there was an equipment malfunction and I don’t know where commonsense (had) gone. It was disgraceful from Shakib and Bangladesh,” Angelo Mathews said during the post-match press conference.

You want to respect people who respect us: Angelo Matthews

Angelo Mathews claims that nearly five seconds were remaining in the timeout. Moreover, the great cricketer also pointed out the reason why the two teams did not shake hands after the match. The star all-rounder reveals that the Bangladeshi side does not possess respect and common sense for the Sri Lankan team, for which they left the field without congratulating them at all.

“If they want to play cricket like that, stoop to that level, it is something wrong drastically. If I got late, past my two minutes and the law says I have to get ready in two minutes, I still had five more seconds to go. It was just pure commonsense, I am not saying (doing) ‘Mankading’ or obstructing the field here, It is absolutely disgraceful. You want to respect people who respect us. We are all ambassadors of this beautiful game. If you don’t respect and use your commonsense then what more you can ask for,” he added further.
