WATCH: Babar Azam loses cool after crowd trolls him with ‘Zimbabar’ chants in PSL 2024 clash

Some fans made fun of former Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam in the Pakistan Super League 2024 game. Notably, fans started yelling “Zimbabar” at Babar Azam, who had been sitting on a bench with the technical staff during the game.

Peshawar Zalmi skipper became frustrated by the chanting and made a threat of throwing a water bottle in their face. The Lahore-born cricketer looked clearly offended by the teasing that he was receiving from his fans in the Pakistan Super League. Notably, the fans have expressed their displeasure with such an act and criticised him for his nasty and creepy actions.

Babar Azam had a terrible 2023 year across all the formats of the game. Notably, the Pakistani team struggled to perform well in the Asia Cup 2023 and the 2023 ODI World Cup under their guidance. Babar Azam was consequently removed as skipper in all forms of the game after they failed to reach the playoffs.
After the ODI World Cup 2023, the stylish right-handed batter struggled to make a mark in the Australia Test series but performed well in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

What is the significance of Babar Azam being called “Zimbabar” by his fans?

Babar Azam has been an excellent batter since making his debut for Pakistan in 2015. The Pakistani batsman had considerable expectations of himself in all forms of the game, having previously been considered Virat Kohli’s replacement on the international stage. However, over the past two to three years, the star batter has developed an unfavourable record for performing badly in important Pakistani contests while performing well in games that are either easy or insignificant.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam has amassed 693 runs at an average of 57.75 against Zimbabwe in all the 18 matches he has played so far. The idea that the star batter needs a series against Zimbabwe to turn around his bad form and score some runs is at the root of the scream, “Zimbabar.”
