Report: Babar Azam set to step down as Pakistan captain after ODI World Cup 2023
The Pakistan cricket team is all set to lock horns against defending champions England in their must-win encounter of the ODI World Cup 2023, slated to take place on November 11 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Notably, Babar Azam and Co. need a big win against England to qualify for the semi-final. They are almost out of the playoffs after New Zealand registered a comprehensive win over Sri Lanka in their last clash.
Meanwhile, according to reports, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is likely to step down from his position owing to poor performances in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. The star cricketer has also spoken up about his captaincy ahead of the game. In addition, the 29-year-old cricketer revealed that he will look into captaincy matters once he goes back to his country after the marquee event. The Lahore-born cricketer revealed that their next target is to defeat England, not thinking about capacity matters at this position.
“About the captaincy–as I said, once we go back to Pakistan or after this match, we will see what happens. But right now, I am not focusing on this; my focus is on the next match,” Babar Azam said in the pre-match conference.
I have not performed the way I should have in the World Cup: Babar Azam
Moreover, the top-order batsman accepted that he had not performed well in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. The stylish right-handed batsman also denied the rumour that his form is poor due to captaincy pressure.
“I have been captaining my team for the last three years, and I have never felt this way. It’s just because I have not performed the way I should have in the World Cup, that’s why people are saying that I am under pressure. I am under no pressure. Have been doing this for the last 2.5 or 3 years. I was the one who was performing, and I was the one who was the captain. I was applying the same thing,” he added further.
