Shakib Al Hasan takes political plunge –

The 36-year-old Bangladeshi ODI skipper Shakib Al Hasan will make his political debut in early January. The all-rounder will be joining Awami League during the Bangladeshi General Elections next year and he will be fighting from his home constituency of Magura -1.

Badruddin Nasim, who happens to be the joint secretary of the Awami League said, “He is a celebrity and has great popularity among the country’s youth”. If Shakib happens to win his seat he will join his former teammate and skipper Mashrafe Mortaza in achieving this feat.

Mashrafe Mortaza is also part of the Awami League and won the 2018 election from his constituency of Narail-2. It was a landslide win for the 40-year-old who tallied 96% votes from his home seat.  The former national skipper is also the Youth and Sports affairs secretary in the Awami League.

It was during the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament that Shakib Al Hasan found himself in the middle of a huge controversy. During the Sri Lanka versus Bangladesh game in New Delhi, Angelo Mathews became the first batter to be dismissed timed out.

Despite the protests from the former Sri Lankan skipper, Shakib Al Hasan did not budge from his decision to appeal. Social media fans and cricket experts were divided on the move, with many slamming Shakib Al Hasan over the move.

Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday released Shakib Al Hasan along with his national teammate Litton Das. Veteran bowlers, Umesh Yadav, Tim Southee, and Lockie Ferguson also parted their ways with the two-time IPL winners. Shardul Thakur who was traded for INR 10.75 Crores is also back in the Auction list after getting released on Sunday.
