‘Best motivational speaker in dressing room’- Fans recall Ravi Shastri’s famous speech as India celebrates historic Gabba Test victory anniversary

January 19th holds a special place in the heart of Indian fans as it was on this day a young Indian team broke Australia’s 32-year-long unbeaten streak at the Gabba, Brisbane and won their second Test series on Australian soil. It’s India’s most memorable Test series victory overseas as a depleted Indian side stood tall against the formidable Aussies in their backyard and painted the Gabba ‘Blue’.

India required a mammoth 328 runs to win on the final day of the fourth and final Test to win the series. The Indian chase was led by a 21-year-old Shubman Gill who ripped apart Mitchell Starc as he put his imperious pulling prowess and display and smacked him all around the ground. The youngster missed out on a well-deserved hundred as he got dismissed on 91.

The other strong pillar that helped India’s chase foundation remain intact was Cheteshwar Pujara. The experienced campaigner who carried the Indian batting line-up in the first series victory down under in 2018, started a memorable rearguard action facing a hostile bowling spell by Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. Pujara stood like a rock between Australia and their victory as he tired their quicks with his defensive play scoring 56 off 211 balls. Touted as Rahul Dravid’s successor, Pujara took several nasty blows on his fingers and chest but didn’t throw his wicket away.

India’s last hero on the final day was the swashbuckling wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant who gave a mighty scare to Australia in the previous Test in Sydney. Pant started his innings cautiously and kept the scoreboard moving with a 61-run stand with Pujara. However, as the required runs came under 50, he unleashed his beast mode and mercilessly thrashed the Australian attack to script a historic win for India. Pant remained unbeaten on 89 as Australia lost their first Test at Gabba in 32 years.

Ravi Shastri gave a rousing speech following India’s victory

The Indian team without having stars such as Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav won their second consecutive Test series in Australia.

Following India’s historic win, head coach Ravi Shastri gave a rousing speech in the dressing room and had words of appreciation for all the stars of the series. The Indian Cricket Board uploaded Shastri’s speech on their social media handles to celebrate the second anniversary of India’s victory.
