‘Chalo kabhi toh sahi baat kari Kapil Paaji ne’ – Fans react to Kapil Dev’s statement on in-form Gujarat Titans player

In the IPL 2023 Qualifier 2, Shubman Gill displayed his great batting prowess by scoring 129 runs in a brilliant innings to lead Gujarat Titans to a convincing victory against five-time champions Mumbai Indians. The victory sent GT into the IPL championship game for the second year in a row. On May 28, GT will play Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Gill’s technique was simply outstanding as he alongside Wriddhiman Saha established a great partnership at the start, leading the Titans to a reliable 50/0 following the powerplay overs. Gill maintained his command of the match even after Saha was dismissed by carefully planning out his innings. In the later half, he demonstrated a mix of strategic boundaries and quality shots, hitting his half-century in only 32 balls.

Gill’s scoring rate rose as the innings went on and his blistering performance, which included 10 magnificent sixes and seven excellent boundaries, helped the Gujarat Titans reach a massive total of 233 runs. Suryakumar Yadav put in a heroic effort, scoring 61 runs in 38 balls, but the Mumbai Indians could only muster 171 runs in return and were eventually knocked out of the tournament.

What did the former World Cup winner say about Shubman Gill?

1983 World Cup winner Kapil Dev spoke on ABP news about how Gill is following in the steps of some of the greats of the Indian game. He said, “Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and now with the kind of batting he is showing, it appears that Shubman Gill is following in their footsteps. But I will like to give him another season (before making big claims). He definitely has the talent and ability but he needs more maturity.”

Kapil Dev further spoke about what Gill needs to do if he wants to follow in the footsteps of some of the legends of Indian batting. He said, “If he plays another season like this, there is no doubt that he too could be included in the list of great players. But I would not like to take him to that league currently. Maybe he needs to give one more year. It’s too early (to say).”
