Cricket and Squash confirmed to be part of Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028
The Asian Games 2022 held in Hangzhou, China saw India participate in Cricket for the first time. Both men and women won the gold medal in what was a medal-filled event for India. Squash too won India laurels during the Asian Games event. Now, the Olympics wants to cash into the frenzy as they have made a huge announcement.
The next edition of the Olympic Games is set to be held in Paris but the Indian fans will wait for the LA Games in 2028. Cricket is set to be included after a whopping 128 years. India will be one of the favourites for a podium finish with the plethora of talent available.
The Apex Olympic Body held a review meeting this week to discuss the inclusion of many more sports. Cricket and Squash are just two of the many disciplines that will be competed for during the LA Games in 2028.
Cricket is officially back in the Olympics –
The official committee, which is organizing the LA Olympics in 2028, had proposed five sports to be included. One of the biggest talking points was Cricket, and it was reported on Monday that is set to make a comeback to the biggest summer event in sports.
The last time Cricket was played in the Olympics was during the 1900 games which were held in Paris. The game was played between Great Britain and French Athletic Union. The entire match lasted for two days and was played in a test match format. One another interesting aspect was that 12 players took part in the game.
Britain batted first and were bowled out for a mere 117 before the French team was dismissed for 78. Armed with a lead of 39 Britain declared at 145/5 in their second innings with an overall lead of 184. Chasing 185 to win to take the Gold Medal, France were all out for 26 to lose by 158 runs.
Apart from Cricket, other sports like Squash, Flag Football, Softball, and Lacrosse were included. Flag Football is very prominent in the USA while Lacrosse is also famous in the American and European continents. Asian Games 2022 saw Cricket being played in the T20 format with the matches being considered official. One wonders if the same will be done during LA Games in 2028.
