Cricket Australia to conduct investigation on Glenn Maxwell in alcohol-related incident
After all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was hospitalised in Adelaide due to an alcohol-related incident, Cricket Australia launched an investigation. Maxwell was at a city venue last Friday, witnessing the band Six and Out, which was led by former Australia Test cricketer Brett Lee. That was when an ambulance was summoned, and he was admitted to the hospital.
Cricket Australia issued a statement saying, “Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide at the weekend and is seeking further information,” a statement read. It is not related to him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision that was made following the BBL and based on his individual management plan. Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series. No further comment will be made at this time.”
The 35-year-old’s current deal with the Melbourne Stars has two years remaining on it. He resigned from his position as their captain last week after his team was eliminated from the BBL playoffs.
Jake Fraser-McGurk and Xavier Bartlett were included in the ODI team
Thought to be Australia’s most gifted young batsman, Jake Fraser-McGurk is expected to play at the senior level after being included in the ODI squad for the next series against the West Indies. For the three-match series, Australia has selected pacer Xavier Bartlett in addition to Fraser-McGurk. This season, Bartlett has been the BBL’s top wicket-taker both with the new ball and in the dying stages of games. Jhye Richardson’s latest injury has forced Bartlett to be called into a group that already lacks first-choice pacers.
Steven Smith will be captaining the Australian side. The first two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) of the three-match series will take place at the MCG on February 2 and the SCG and Canberra’s Manuka Oval on February 3.
