David Willey announces retirement from international cricket amid England’s awful ODI World Cup 2023 campaign
English star cricketer David Willey has announced his retirement from international cricket. Notably, Willey made a huge announcement on November 1, in the middle of the ODI World Cup 2023. However, the 33-year-old cricketer made this revelation after the England Cricket Board did not give him the central contract for the 2023–2024 cycle.
The left-arm pacer was last seen in action against India on October 29 at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, where he dismissed India’s batting legend Virat Kohli on a duck while also removing middle-order batsman KL Rahul for 39 runs that gave their side a great start. However, Team India beat them by 100 runs and won the clash against England.
The great bowling all-rounder took to social media and expressed his emotions about leaving international cricket after the ongoing ODI World Cup in 2023. In addition, the Northampton-born cricketer says that he never wanted such a day to come in his life; however, he was thankful to his friends, family members, and coaches who kept pushing him and helping him become one of the true legends for the English side.
Thank you for sharing the special memories and picking up the pieces: David Willey
“I never wanted this day to come. From a young boy, I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup. I have worn the shirt with immense pride and given my absolute everything to the badge on my chest,” David Willey wrote on his social media.
