‘Legacy is created by winning tournaments, not individual records’ – Gautam Gambhir gives valuable advice to Babar Azam

The Pakistan cricket team is all set to lock horns against five-time world champions Australia on October 20 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai for their fourth game of ODI World Cup 2023. Notably, Babar Azam and Co. have won against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka; however, hosts India thrashed them by 7 wickets, which puts them in the fourth spot in the points table.

Meanwhile, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, needs to take more responsibility to make sure his side wins the matches in the ongoing marquee event. The well-known cricket commentator feels that the 28-year-old skipper needs to change his personality, game, and mindset to help his side win the games. In addition, the former India opener believes Pakistan’s top three batsmen have the same approach; however, if one can change that, that should be captain.

“I feel Babar will have to change his personality, his game and, importantly, his mindset. Pakistan have had a history of attacking batters – Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Saeed Anwar, Aamer Sohail. In the present top three, everyone bats in similar mode. If someone has to take responsibility, it has to be their captain, who bats at No. 3,” Gautam Gambhir told Sportskeeda.

Babar Azam may become Pakistan’s leading run-getter: Gautam Gambhir

The 2011 ODI World Cup-winning star feels the Lahore-born skipper is the number one ODI batsman and the highest run scorer for his side; however, it will not create a legacy from his own individual records. Moreover, the LSG coach cited the example of the 2011 ODI World Cup, where Sri Lanka star batsman Mahela Jayawardene stuck out a century, and despite that, India won the final.

“There is no point looking at stats. You may become Pakistan’s leading run-getter, but legacy is created by winning tournaments, not individual records. Nobody talks about Mahela Jayawardene’s hundred in the 2011 final. Everyone remembers that India won the match,” he added further.
