Hasan Ali picks star all-rounder as Pakistan captain to replace Babar Azam

Questions are being raised about Babar Azam’s captaincy as Pakistan suffered miserable defeats, recently, especially in the matches played at home. One of the best batters in the world today, Babar Azam faces a lot of criticism from fans and former greats alike, with some insisting that he should step down as a leader in at least one format.

Despite leading the Men in Green to the finals of last year’s Asia Cup and 20-20 World Cup, humiliating performances against England, Australia, and New Zealand have put the Pakistan skipper’s role under scrutiny.

Speedster Shaheen Afridi, who led Lahore Qalandars to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) title last year, and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan are seen as possible replacements for Babar. However, pacer Hasan Ali named his PSL teammate to take up the role.

β€œHe is ready [for Pakistan captaincy]. He has proved himself as a captain in PSL. I think he has also led Pakistan in two matches, so I think he is ready. He is always ready for any challenge and gives his best,” said Hasan when asked to share his thoughts on Shadab Khan as the next Pakistan captain.

An integral member of Pakistan’s white ball team, Shadab Khan has been leading Islamabad United in the PSL since 2019. He has led Islamabad 32 times in which the team won 17 and lost 15. The star all-rounder, who finished as the joint leading wicket-taker for Pakistan in the Cricket Governing Body Men’s 20-20 World Cup last year, is also the vice-captain of his national team in limited overs.

The latest edition of the PSL is underway, with Lahore Qalandars winning by 1 run against Multan Sultans in the opening match on Monday. Babar Azam’s Peshawar Zalmi will take on Imad Wasim’s Karachi Kings at the National Stadium, Karachi today (February 14). Meanwhile, Shadab and Co. will kick-off their campaign against Kings on Thursday.
