‘He cried on that night’ – Former CSK spinners reveals unheard story of MS Dhoni’s rare emotional moment
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni is receiving immense support and love from his fans across the country as rumours are rife that this will be his last Indian Premier League (IPL) season as a player. Although the legend himself had given some hints about his retirement, the wicketkeeper-batter has not made any such statement. The 41-year-old, however, is still sharp with his decision-making and continues to amuse viewers with his final over sixes.
While Dhoni’s retirement remains a major topic of discussion in the cricket fraternity, many are celebrating his rich legacy over the years and also reminiscing about the good moments and memories the No. 7 has given them. His former teammates Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir also shared an unheard story of a rare moment when ‘Captain Cool’ failed to control his emotions in front of his co-players.
Former CSK spinners recalled an incident in 2018
During the live show #IPLONSTAR on Star Sports, the two former CSK spinners recalled an incident in 2018 when the Chennai-based franchise returned to the IPL after a two-year ban following a betting scandal.
“There is a story which I want to share. Back in 2018, when CSK made a comeback to this league after a two-year ban there was a team dinner. We must have heard the saying that ‘Men don’t cry’, but MS Dhoni cried on that night. He became emotional. I think no one knows about this,” said Harbhajan.
When the hosts asked fellow panellist Tahir about the incident, he said: “Even I was there. It was a very emotional moment for him (Dhoni). Looking at him like that, I came to know how close this team is to his heart. He considers the team as his family. It was very emotional for all of us.
“We came back after two years and won the trophy when people gave our team the tag of buddhe (old men). Even I was in the squad that season, but we won the title. I am very proud of that victory.”
