India vs New Zealand 2023
‘He is going to be the Kambli of this generation…’ – Twitter divided as string of low Scores continue for Ishan Kishan
Team India clinched the T20I series against New Zealand on Wednesday with a dominant 168-run win in Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. While young guns Shubman Gill and Umran Malik returned with happy faces, India’s wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan continued his poor run of form. In the second over, Kishan was caught LBW by a straight delivery from New Zealand’s spinner, Michael Bracewell.
This is the eighth consecutive international outing for the Patna-born in which he has failed to get past the 20-run mark. Kishan’s unfortunate showing has not only been in the shortest format of the game. He has gone under the shadows since his blockbuster double-hundred against Bangladesh in December 2022.
Ishan Kishan has struggled across formats
Since scoring the fastest double hundred in ODIs, Kishan is somewhat stuck in a sequence of low scores. He played in each of the three ODIs and T20Is against New Zealand, scoring a cumulative 54 runs in six innings. His last notable innings was a 37-run cameo against Sri Lanka in the first T20I at Wankhede.
It is only natural that Indian fans are frustrated with his showings, mainly because replacements are warming the bench. Fans took to Twitter to express their views, and several popular opinions gained traction. The general complaint from fans was about Prithvi Shaw not getting his fair share of chances. Even former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer considered it was a good idea to have Shaw in the playing XI for the final game.
Kishan was compared to the likes of KL Rahul for replicating a similar trend of low scores as the Bengaluru boy. One user went on to say that Kishan might follow the path of former India batter Vinod Kambli; high on potential, but his head is not in the right place. While most fans were frustrated, Kishan is a lovable character, and his fans did come to his defence.
