‘He is synonymous with confidence’ – Fans react as Neeraj Chopra starts celebrating before his gold-winning 88.17m javelin throw lands in World Athletics Championships

Neeraj Chopra has made it a hobby to make India proud. The 25-year-old, who already won gold at the Olympics, has once again done something spectacular to fly the tricolour proudly in the world of athleticism. Chopra won gold in the men’s javelin event at the 2023 IAAF World Athletics Championships on Sunday, August 27 in Budapest, Hungary with a best throw of 88.17m.

The Olympic champion scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. India’s ‘Golden Boy’ did not get the desired start as the first attempt was called foul. However, he marked his best of the day in his second attempt with a record distance of 88.17m. Chopra’s marks were: 88.17m, 86.32m, 84.64m, 87.73m and 83.98m.

This also marked a significant improvement for him from the 2022 event, where the Haryana-born athlete became the first Indian to win silver. A video of Chopra’s gold-winning javelin throw is doing the rounds on social media, and his confidence level has caught the attention. As soon as the javelin was released from his hand, the champion turned back and raised both hands in celebration. Fans have been giving amazing reactions to the video, recalling Chopra’s similar celebration after his throw at the Olympics.

After becoming world champion, he spoke about his first attempt, which was called a foul. “I was thinking I’ll [go long] with the first throw, but there were some technical problems with that attempt. Because the first went poorly, it happens [a little bit of pressure builds], but I pushed myself, and I was thinking a bit about my groin injury [which had kept him out of action for most of the season], I was being careful, and my speed was not 100%. And when my speed is not there, I feel a dip somewhere so that’s what’s left now… to get 100% fit [and throw even further],” Chopra siad.

He dedicated the medal to all Indians and motivated budding sports enthusiasts to make India proud in their respective fields.“I thank all Indians for staying up so late to watch me. This medal is for the whole of India… I became Olympic champion, now I’m world champion… which shows we [Indians] can do anything. All of you keep working hard like this in different, different fields and [we’ll make our nation proud],” he added.
