Historic feat for Aussie captain Meg Lanning after World Cup win, surpasses Ricky Ponting

The mighty Australians defeated South Africa Women by 19 runs in the Women’s 20-20 World Cup to lift their sixth title. Australia Women’s hat-trick 20-20 World Cup title winning was also a historic achievement for Aussie captain Meg Lanning. She surpassed legendary skippers Ricky Ponting and MS Dhoni in the list of most Cricket Governing Body titles as captain, crowning Australia five times champions.

With today’s win over South Africa, Lanning became the first captain in the history of the game to clinch three consecutive 20-20 World Cup titles as well. She grabbed her fourth 20-20 World Cup title with her latest achievement and also won the 50-over World Cup title in 2022. Going by the statistics, Lanning is now undoubtedly the most successful captain in the history of cricket.

The Aussie captain lifted a Cricket Governing Body trophy for the first time as captain in 2014 when Australia won their third 20-20 World Cup title. There is no doubt in Lanning winning back-to-back major tournament trophies, as she holds amazing numbers as captain in both ODIs and T20Is. Australia has won 76 T20Is and 69 ODIs so far under her leadership.

With her latest achievement, the former Indian captain MS Dhoni comes at the third spot for having won three Cricket Governing Body trophies. The former wicketkeeper-batter led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Ponting has won four major titles as captain, the first of which came in 2003 when Australia beat India in the World Cup final. Under his leadership, Australia also won 2007 ODI World Cup title and two Champions Trophy titles in 2006 and 2009.

Australia proves they are the powerhouse of women’s cricket

Australia once again proved that they are invincible as they completely dominated in all departments throughout the World Cup. Their batting quality, depth, versatility, bowling power and fielding was unmatchable by any opponent and as a result, the beat South Africa to clinch their sixth 20-20 WC title.

Opener Beth Mooney’s 74 off 53 balls was crucial to their record win at Newlands, Cape Town on Sunday. It was South Africa’s first appearance in a World Cup final (senior men’s and women’s) and there was every chance of lifting their maiden trophy as well. But chasing a target of 157 runs, the Aussie bowlers dashed their hopes by restricting the Proteas to 137 runs for six wickets.
