‘Hopefully it doesn’t reach the stage we experienced in 2018’- Dean Elgar ahead of first Test against Australia

Australia vs South Africa is an eagerly-anticipated series. This is the first time the two sides will meet in Test cricket since the infamous 2018 series. There is always a chance that something ignites on the field.

On paper, this doesn’t look like a contest. The biggest question for South Africa is whether they can put enough runs on the board when their captain Dean Elgar has the best record among the batters with an average of 38.83. On the tour of England earlier this year, there was one half-century.

Compared to Australia, where two of the top five average over sixty and the others well over 40, there is a huge discrepancy. A glimmer for the visitors is that David Warner has had a lean couple of years in Test cricket.

‘Ego and heat of the moment gets to the guys’- Dean Elgar

Elgar said that the Proteas will not be shying away from green pitches and testing Australian conditions. With the first Test match between Australia and South Africa is set to begin on 17 December. He said his team was “salivating” at the prospect of facing Australia and conceded there could be “feisty” moments

“We don’t have any dirty laundry when it comes to playing at the Gabba because we haven’t played here yet. The history here is not in our favour, and that’s OK. The fact we haven’t had any failures here might work in our favour. We’ve been here for two weeks and have been salivating for this moment. We’re looking forward to getting going.” He said.

“There will be moments no doubt when there will be a few feisty encounters, hopefully it doesn’t reach the stage we experienced in 2018, There’s no grudges, but we want to win, they want to win, there will always be a moment when ego and heat of the moment gets to the guys. But I think it will be better controlled.” He added.
