Hosts Namibia’s win over Tanzania helps them qualify for 2024 T20 World Cup

Namibia became the first side from the African region to book their tickets for the T20 World Cup 2024 tournament. Gerhard Erasmus and his side beat Tanzania by 58 runs to secure their place in the biggest global T20 tournament in the world.

This is the third consecutive T20 World Cup Namibia will be part of after they participate in 2021 and 2022 tournaments. The next edition of the T20 World Cup is set to be held in the West Indies and the United States of America in June.

It was a huge day for Namibian cricket fans as they became the 1st African side to qualify for the 2024 T20 World. Tanzania lost the match by 58 runs as the Namibian team celebrated a monumental moment in their cricketing history.

Namibia qualifies for the 2024 T20 World Cup

Batting first, Namibia scored 157/6 from their 20 overs. Openers Michael Van Lingen and Nikolaas Davin added 37 runs for the 1st wicket in just 4.1 overs before Davin was out for 25. Skipper Gerhard Erasmus then added 40 runs for the 2nd wicket with Van Lingen before being dismissed for 21.

Opener Michael Van Lingen scored 30 runs from 33 balls with the help of one boundary. JJ Smit was the top scorer for Namibia as he hit 40 runs from just 25 balls with a four and 4 massive sixes.

Chasing 158 to win, Ivan Selemani was out for a first-ball duck to David Wiese. Amal Rajeevan was the top scorer with the bat as he hit 41 runs from 45 balls with 2 fours. Tanzania could only score 99 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. There was a huge roar and massive celebrations as Namibia stamped their entry in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Uganda occupy the 2nd place in the table as they have 6 points from 4 games. Zimbabwe is in the 4th place after having lost 2 games and won two games to notch a total of 4 points. The next game for Sikandar Raza and his team is against Nigeria on Wednesday.

Kenya who are third in the table will take on Uganda on Wednesday. The winner of the game will keep a firm grip on the 2nd position in the table. Zimbabwe had earlier in the tournament lost to Uganda which was the biggest upset so far.
