‘Itni Khushi MI fans ko aaj tak nai hui’ – Fans react as Mumbai Indians grind out their first win over Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023

Mumbai Indians faced the Delhi Capitals in the 16th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Both the teams were winless entering the game and were hoping to get their tournament started with a victory today. Rohit Sharma won an important toss and chose to bat first on a tricky wicket. David Warner, the skipper and youngster Prithvi Shaw started well but the latter lost his wicket in the powerplay after adding a few runs for the side. David Warner and Manish Pandey took the innings forward as they established a great partnership of 43 runs. But after Pandey’s wicket fell, the Mumbai spinner took a flurry of scalps as the Capitals were reduced to 98 for 5 after just 13 overs.

Axar Patel played a wonderful knock as Warner struggled at the other end to find the boundaries. Axar and Warner notched up an important partnership of 67 runs. But after Meridith took his second wicket, which meant Axar had to go back to the pavilion, the Delhi Capitals folded like paper as they lost the next four wickets for 7 runs and that meant Mumbai Indians had to chase an average total of 173 runs in their 20 overs to register their first win of this year’s Indian Premier League.

Another last-over thriller in 2023

Mumbai Indians started off brilliantly with the bat, as Indian openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma showed intent from the start, which was much-needed considering their recent form. They had an excellent power play especially the skipper as the team made 68 runs in their powerplay phase.

Ishan Kishan fell in the 8th over and youngster Tilak Varma was sent to move the innings forward. The Delhi spinners were pretty tight with their line and lengths and didn’t let the batters breathe and grab boundaries easily. Two back-to-back wickets meant that Delhi had a slight chance in the game.

Rohit Sharma was then removed by the Bangladesh speedster Mustafizur Rahman as Mumbai needed 20 from the last two overs. Tim David and Cameron Green hit one six each as they made sure they required as few runs as possible in the final over. Anrich Nortje bowled a tight line which made the final over nail biting to say the least. In the end, Mumbai Indians scraped two runs off the last ball of the match to hand Delhi Capitals their fourth loss of the season and got their first win of the competition.
