‘Jisse sabse kamm umeed thi, ussi ne jitwa diya’ – Fans react as KL Rahul scores a brilliant knock to win India the first ODI against Australia

Hardik Pandya, the Indian team captain for the first ODI game between India and Australia chose to bowl first on a tricky Wankhede pitch. Steve Smith, the interim Australian captain, also said that he didn’t know what to do on such a pitch so it was a good toss to lose.

How did the first innings pan out?

In the first innings of the game, Shami was a little all over the place in his first few overs, but he came on in the middle innings and completely destroyed Australia. He finished the inning with a 3/17 which is a great return. Ravindra Jadeja deservedly earned the statistics of 2/46, while Mohammad Siraj received figures of 3/29. Mitchell Marsh, who appeared to be batting in another planet entirely, was one of the two wickets he took.

After Mitch Marsh got one wide, Ravindra Jadeja encouraged him to keep batting, which set off Australia’s collapse. After only getting an edge to it, wickets started to fall rather often. After the 28th, that rate suddenly increased. Australia would have scored nearly 350 here if they had kept up a run rate even remotely close to what they did while Marsh was on fire.

Although Mitchell Starc put India in a bit of a bind while chasing 189 runs, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja’s unbroken 108-run stand off 123 balls helped them reach the finish line. After the first 11 overs, India had lost Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav.

The Indian captain Hardik Pandya and Rahul then controlled the Indian chase and restored the lead for the hosts. After the removal of Pandya, Australia then had a little window of opportunity, but Rahul and Jadeja quickly put an end to it. Jadeja scored the game’s winning runs and reached 45 off 69, while Rahul finished the match undefeated on 75 off 91 balls.

This sort of knock will certainly give Rahul confidence ahead of a busy year. He has been under tremendous pressure to score runs and was stripped of the vice-captain role, recently, in both Tests and ODIs. With him batting at number five, India seem to have a balanced middle-order and can count on Rahul to keep wickets and score crucial knocks ahead of the World Cup this year
