‘Kavya ji ko Valentine’s Day ka gift mil gaya’ – Fans react as Sunrisers Eastern Cape win inaugural season of SA20

Sunrisers Eastern Cape lockdowns with Pretoria capitals in the final of the inaugural edition of the SA20. The match was played at Johannesburg on February 12. The Sunrisers side led by Aiden Markram defeated the Capitals by 4 wickets to clinch the title. Easter Cape won the toss and elected to bowl first.

The Pretoria franchise was not able to bat even the 20 overs and variable to score only 135 runs in 19.3 overs. Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Kushal Mendis was the highest scorer for the capitals with 21 runs. On the other hand, for the Sunrisers the pick of the bowlers was Van Der Merwe who snapped 4 wickets. Sisanda Mangala and Bartman also took 2-2 wickets each. A 1-1 wicket was grabbed by Marco Jansen and Markram.

Sunrisers chased the target in the 17th over with four wickets in hand. Adam Rossington play an important knock of 57 runs Wes included four fours and five sixes. Sunrisers skipper and Jordan Herrmann also played important innings of 26 runs and 22 runs respectively. Whereas for the Capitals, Anrich Nortje picked two wickets. Apart from them, Eathen Bosch, Adil Rashid, Jimmy Neesham and Colin Ingram took 1 wicket each.

Rolef Vander Merwe was awarded the Player of the Match as he took four wickets and Markham was awarded the Player of the Tournament for his brilliant batting in the whole tournament

Everybody pulled together. Was a proper team effort. He bowls rockets (Nortje). Was great to play against him. I was surprised to be playing games. Would’ve even been happy if I just bowled in the nets,” Van Der Merwe after taking the Player of the Match award.

“We were in a spot of bother (in the semis), and to come through for the team. It made me really happy. Overall very happy with how it went (with the ball) and grateful for this award. They’ve been by my side all the way (family),” Aiden Markram after taking the Player of the Tournament award.
