‘I had never expected that I could drop…..’ – Mohammed Shami opens up on missing Kane Williamson’s catch in ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final
India’s star cricketer Mohammed Shami has recently opened up about the pressure he felt after he dropped the simple and easy catch of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson during the ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final clash in Wankhede Cricket Stadium in Mumbai. Notably, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell were forging the great stand in the semi-final clash, but Shami missed the catch during the 29th over of Jasprit Bumrah.
The 33-year-old cricketer revealed that he was under pressure after dropping the simplest catch in the must-win encounter. In addition, the right-arm pacer says that after dropping the catch, he took on himself to get Kane Williams out in the semi-final game.
“Things changed after that dropped catch. I had never expected that I could drop such a catch. Thought to myself that now he has to get out at any cost. I was under a lot of pressure after that. When I was running to bowl, I thought that either he is going to hit me for three sixes, or I would get him out,” Mohammed Shami said on Sports Tak.
There was a thought that the target was chasable: Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami, who took seven wickets in the must-win game, has opened up about the technical skills and pragmatic approach he used to win the game. Moreover, the Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer feels that their target was chasable, as there was a true bounce at Wankhede Cricket Stadium in Mumbai. Furthermore, the great seamer reveals that even 400 runs on target weren’t safe on a batting-friendly pitch.
“There was a thought that that target was chasable. The match was at the Wankhede Stadium, where there is true bounce. If there are set batters at the crease, it doesn’t matter, even if you need to chase a 400-run target. You can’t be safe after scoring that many runs, especially when you are up against an equal opponent,” he added further.
