‘Pathar ko Sona banane ka hunar hai isme’ – Fans react to Harsha Bhogle’s ‘Dhoni is preparing Pathirana for you, Sri Lanka’ Tweet
Famous Indian cricket expert Harsha Bhogle urged the cricketing world to be careful of a young bowler from Chennai Super Kings on Friday via his official Twitter account. After seeing Matheesha Pathirana’s performance for CSK versus Sunrisers Hyderabad in game no. 29 of the Indian Premier League 2023, Bhogle tweeted about it. After dismissing Heinrich Klassen in the first innings of his second IPL 2023 game for Chennai Super Kings, Pathirana returned with figures of 1/22 in his four overs.
In the eleventh over of the game, the CSK skipper, MS Dhoni gave the ball to the 20-year-old Pathirana for his opening spell. Pathirana first bowled the 11th over, followed by the crucial 16th, 18th, and 20th over. Despite bowling three overs at the death, he only gave away 22 runs and finished with an economy of 5.50.

In the meanwhile, in response to Pathirana’s performance against the Sunrisers, Bhogle stated that the Sri Lankan cricket fans had a true diamond on their hands. He continued by alerting the cricket community by mentioning that Dhoni himself is training Pathirana.
“Sri Lankan fans, you might have got a gem in Pathirana. Dhoni is preparing him for you,” Bhogle said.
It is important to note that since Pathirana debuted in the major leagues, he has been compared to Lankan icon Lasith Malinga. He joined CSK in 2022 and quickly established himself as a valuable member of the team with his Malinga-like round-arm bowling action. In his brief IPL career of only four games, he has taken five wickets in total.
In the post-match presentation show, MS Dhoni also compared Pathirana to Malinga after CSK defeated SRH by 7 wickets on Friday, April 21.
“He has got variations, he has got good pace. We have seen with Malinga – someone who has awkward action and who is very consistent with line and length – it’s difficult to score off him. Definitely, he has been a find and the last few overs he has been bowling, he has been a great asset,” the four-time IPL-winning captain said.
