India were struggling at 31 for 4 while chasing a target of 160 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After that, Kohli and Hardik Pandya saved the day with a 113-run partnership for the fifth wicket and put India back into the game with a 113-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
However, the momentum turned in India’s way after Kohli hit those two famous sixes against Haris Rauf in the penultimate over of the match, when 28 runs were needed off the last 8 balls. After that, there was a lot of drama in the final over, where India lost the wickets of Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik, and a six off a no-ball by Kohli. After that, Ravichandran Ashwin took a single on the final delivery to give India one of the most iconic victories of all time.
Kohli played his one of the best T20 knocks as he remained unbeaten on 82 runs off 53 balls hitting six fours and four sixes. Meanwhile, Ashwin who took the winning run with Kohli on the other hand recalled that iconic match and revealed what actually was going on in his mind when he came to face the final delivery. The off-spinner also revealed his conversation with Kohli.
‘I realised the enormity of what I was getting in to’ – Ashwin
“I was cursing Dinesh Karthik for asking me to do the tougher job. As I was just cursing him, when I walked in, I realised the enormity of what I was getting in to. People yelling I haven’t seen such a crowd ever,” Ashwin was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
“Virat just gave me like seven options to play off that one ball. If only I was that capable of playing all those shots I wouldn’t be batting at no. 8. I just talked to myself, I couldn’t say that to him. I looked at Virat and his eyes seemed like he was possessed. I said, okay he’s on another planet and let me come back to earth. The moment he bowled a wide I knew I won the contest,” he further added.
