England star pacer Reece Topley ruled out for remainder of ODI World Cup 2023 due to finger injury
The England cricket team has suffered a major setback as star cricketer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the ODI World Cup 2023 owing to injuries. Notably, the left-arm pacer sustained finger injuries in the recent clash against South Africa on October 21 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This is a huge loss for the defending champions, as they are currently placed at the bottom of the points table after losing three games out of four in the ODI World Cup 2023.
England’s head coach, Matthew Mott, also gave a hint about Topley’s injuries after the clash against the Proteas. The former Australian coach heaps praise on Topley despite losing the game against South Africa. However, the 50-year-old also reveals that English key bowler Jofra Archer is also not available for selection till the end of the ODI World Cup 2023 owing to the grave injuries he has sustained.
“I thought Reece Topley going back out to bowl with a broken finger showed great spirit. We’re still waiting on that, but it’s very much looking like it’s a crack. Certainly, that’s the early diagnosis, but we’ll find out properly with X-rays. Jof is actually not going to be considered for selection. He’s come out, he’s reported to the medical staff, but he’s not going to be able to play a part in the end of this campaign,” Matthew Mott said.
Reece Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours: ECB
The ECB has revealed that 29-year-old cricketer Reece Topley has the full extent of the injury after the scan he had on Saturday. In addition, the great cricketer will be closely monitored by the medical team for rehabilitation. The fast-bowler’s replacement for the Jos Buttler-led England side will be soon made by the ECB.
“Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury. Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours. He will work closely with the England and Surrey medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation. A replacement will be announced in due course,” an official statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said.
