‘I’m a no, he doesn’t deserve it….’ – Ricky Ponting’s audacious claim on Glenn Maxwell playing Test cricket

Former Australia cricketer Ricky Ponting recently has opened up about the possibility of Glenn Maxwell playing Test cricket. Notably, the Australia cricket team is currently playing a Test series against the Pakistan team; however, Glenn Maxwell didn’t get the chance to be in the squad despite the magnificent ODI World Cup 2023 and bilateral T20I series against India.

The former top-order batter believes that Glenn Maxwell does not deserve the chance in Test cricket until and unless he has first-class cricket. In addition, the 48-year-old cricketer advised Australia’s great all-rounder to score runs in first-class cricket to get back into Test cricket for his national side.

“No one deserves a chance unless you’ve got a truckload of first-class runs behind you. I’m a no, he doesn’t deserve it. But if he gets a chance to go back and make some first-class runs then he can force his way back in,” Ricky Ponting said on Channel 7.

They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions: Glenn Maxwell

Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell also accepted that he didn’t get the chance to be in the Test line-up against Pakistan. However, the Victoria-born cricketer is hopeful of getting a place in the longest format of the game in the coming years. Australia’s great all-rounder feels that his other teammates have played really great Test cricket, and they were also the World Test Champions, and they deserve to get a place in the squad over him.

“I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025. So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage. There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour, I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side,” Glenn Maxwell said on SEN Radio.
