‘Sahi khel gaya Ambani’- All of Twitter makes the same joke after Mumbai outclass Delhi to Women’s T20 League Trophy

Mumbai made history by winning the inaugural Women’s T20 League after defeating Delhi by seven wickets in the much-awaited final played at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Delhi captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to bat first, but her team could only manage a modest total of 131-9. Mumbai’s bowling attack proved too strong for the Capitals, with Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav being the only players to show any resistance with the bat, contributing 27 runs each.

In response, Mumbai lost both their openers early, but their captain Harmanpreet Kaur and England all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt steadied the innings with a crucial 72-run partnership. Kaur scored 37 runs while Sciver-Brunt remained unbeaten on 60 off just 41 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries and a six.

The recently concluded five-team tournament for women’s cricket has been lauded as a ‘game-changer’ for the sport, with a strong emphasis on attracting top players through lucrative deals. The sale of franchises and media rights for the WTL alone garnered a whopping $690 million, which is a testament to the tournament’s popularity and marketability.

The Indian Cricket Board managed to secure an impressive array of sponsors for the 22-match event, further highlighting its importance and potential for growth. The tournament also saw the introduction of several new rules, including Powerplay overs, strategic time-outs, and a Super Over in case of a tie, making it even more exciting for the players and the fans.

The success of the WTL has created a new pathway for young and aspiring female cricketers in India and around the world. The tournament has given them the opportunity to showcase their skills, gain experience, and play alongside some of the best players in the game.
