Salman Butt sacked as selection committee consultant just one day after his appointment due to huge backlash

Former Pakistani skipper Salman Butt has been sacked as the consultant to the new selection committee. Wahab Riaz the newly elected chairman of selectors has made the decision public.

Salman Butt’s inclusion into the cricket affairs of Pakistan caused a lot of controversy. The 39-year-old was called out by former skipper and PCB Chief Ramiz Raja once the news came to light.

Apart from Salman Butt, two more faces were included in the new set-up. Kamran Akmal and Iftikhar Rao Anjum were asked to help Wahab Riaz with the decision-making process for the men in green.

Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt has been asked to leave his position as the consultant to the selection committee. Wahab Riaz heads the new selection panel and was given three consultants which include Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and Salman Butt.

Just 24 hours after the appointment was made official there was a huge backlash over the decision. Wahab Riaz said to the media “People were talking all sorts of stuff about me and Salman Butt. Therefore, I am reverting the decision and I have already spoken to Salman Butt and I have told him that he cannot be part of my team”

Former Pakistan skipper Ramiz Raja has been a known critic of Butt and lambasted the decision during a chat with CRICBUZZ. Ramiz Raja said “It’s insane to have a selection committee consisting of a member whose decision can be termed as a display of filial affection or non-affection and another who was locked up for match-fixing,”

After making the appointment the PCB had put out a statement which clarified the role that the three members would fulfill. “Consultant members assist the chief selector by providing recommendations, collecting feedback, and identifying top-performing talent in domestic cricket.”

The statement further read “Their role is to present this information to the chief selector and the selection committee for consideration in their decision-making process. The Consultant Members do not have any independent decision-making powers.”

Pakistan Cricket Team is currently in Australia to play three three-match test series which starts on the 14th of December in Perth. Shan Masood is the new test skipper, while Shaheen Shah Afridi is the new T20I skipper. Babar Azam quit the national captaincy after Pakistan’s 5th-place finish during the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign in India.
