Shreyanka Patil set to become first Indian to take part in Women’s Caribbean Premier League

After all the success the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) had immense success as the tournament added a lot of significance to Women’s cricket among the fans and also for Indian Women’s cricket. Citing this, one of the young talents from WPL, Shreyanka Patil has made history by playing in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) as the first Indian player. The Guyana Amazon Warriors signed the 20-year-old for the upcoming season, which is slated to begin from August 31 to September 10.

Following her outstanding efforts in the just-finished Women’s Emerging Asia Cup in Hong Kong, Patil was awarded a contract to play in the WCPL. She won Player of the Tournament after taking nine wickets in two games for India A. Notably, India won the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup after defeating Bangladesh A by a score of 31 runs in the championship match.

Despite not having a great performance in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), Patil was one of the standout players for Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB-W). For RCB, the 20-year-old took six wickets from seven games, averaging 32.00 and 9.84 at an economy rate. Notably, women cricketers are permitted to compete in international competitions by the Indian Cricket Board. Richa Ghosh, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, and Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of India, have all previously played in franchise leagues including the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia and The Hundred in England.

Three teams compete in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League: the Trinbago Knight Riders, the Guyana Amazon Warriors, and the Barbados Royals. Players from the West Indies, including Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews, and Stafanie Taylor, will participate in the competition. Players from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, and India will also be present in addition to them.

All three New Zealanders, Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, and Fran Jonas, will compete in the competition. Australians Laura Harris and Amanda-Jade Wellington will also compete in the competition. They will be joined by South African cricketers Dane van Niekerk, Mignon de Preez, and Shabnim Ismail.
