Shreyas Iyer’s likely absence for final three Tests against England takes new turn after new reports emerge

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer’s participation in the final three Tests vs England is under threat. The 29-year-old had earlier in the day complained of a groin strain and back stiffness. Team India is already suffering due to a lack of experienced batters in their team after the first 2 Tests.

Virat Kohli is more than likely to miss the entire series due to his off-the-field issues. KL Rahul is yet another batter who is touch-and-go for the game in Rajkot. With India struggling for fit players this latest news has come as a huge blow.

Just hours after the news was made public, a new report about Shreyas Iyer emerged. One Indian Cricket Board source has rubbished the claims about Iyer’s injury. The reason behind the 29-year-old not playing is more down to form.

Injured? Or Dropped? Questions arise about Shreyas Iyer –

On Friday morning news emerged that Indian batter Shreyas Iyer might miss the next three Tests versus England. The 29-year-old has complained of fitness issues that came to light recently.

Cricketnext published a story and it was soon quoted by the Indian Express newspaper. One Indian board member has categorically denied Shreyas Iyer being injured. The real reason could be the lack of runs the 29-year-old has put up on the board.

The unnamed source said “Injury issues? What are we saying? Did you see his run-out of Ben Stokes? The fact is runs are just not coming and more is expected from the young middle-order batter. That is the biggest concern and the issue at the moment. He faced over 50 deliveries in three of his four innings and the concern is that the runs haven’t come”

If Shreyas Iyer does miss the final three games of the series, the selectors will have to look for backup. Cheteshwar Pujara could be given a recall since his form in the longest format has been good so far. The veteran batter notched up yet another ton for Saurashtra and also went past 20,000 runs.

Speaking about Jadeja and KL Rahul, the source said “We are awaiting for clearances and updates on Jadeja and Rahul and that is what led to the delay in selectors announcing the squad. We are talking about two big players so it’s important to get a clear picture on both of them before going ahead with the team selection for the series”
