‘Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still excellent………’ – Former batting legend passes stunning judgement on India star batters fielding capabilities
Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar makes a stunning remark on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future in the T20 World Cup 2024. Notably, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not played a single T20I game since India’s 10-wicket loss in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 against England in Adelaide. However, Hardik Pandya has been leading the side owing to his successful stint with GT in the IPL 2022 and 2023.
Sunil Gavaskar feels former India skipper Virat Kohli has been in red-hot form for the past 1.5 years, especially in limited form of cricket. Notably, the 35-year-old cricketer played a pivotal role in guiding the hosts to the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, being the leading run-scorer of the tournament. The legendary cricketer feels both stars deserve a place in the T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to take place in June in the USA and West Indies.
“Virat Kohli’s form has been outstanding for the past 1.5 years. He also played brilliantly at the ODI World Cup. So, there should not be any debate over his batting prowess in limited-overs cricket. A massive aspect is that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still excellent fielders,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
That’s not a problem for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli because they are still terrific fielders: Sunil Gavaskar
Meanwhile, the well-renowned cricket commentator heaps praise on both batters’ fielding while citing the example of a few old batters aged 36 to 37. In addition, the former batting legend feels that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s presence in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad will boost India’s camp.
“Sometimes, you get slow when you are 35-36; your throw isn’t that good anymore. So, there are discussions over where to keep you while setting the field. That’s not a problem for these two because they are still terrific fielders. In addition to seniority in the dressing room, they will contribute on the field, too. We don’t know if Rohit will be captain, but whatever the case, any captain will surely benefit from that,” he added further.
