Sunil Gavaskar makes bold prediction on Rohit Sharma’s permanent opening partner in Test Cricket
It did not require long for Shubman Gill to gain the notice of the Indian management. At the age of 18, Gill made his debut at a major event and left everyone in awe. Since then, Gill, India’s leading scorer in the competition, has gained attention, and his graph has been steadily climbing.
In the first half of the Test series against Australia, Gill had to warm the benches because Rohit had returned, but a slump in Rahul’s performance gave him a chance in the third Test. The right-handed batter appeared reliable in both innings of the Indore Test, but the spin-friendly set-up defeated him.
In Ahmedabad’s fourth Test, Gill was more than atoned for it. He smashed 128 in India’s first innings with 12 fours and a six. His inclusion in India’s starting lineup for the Test Championship final was almost guaranteed by that knock.
Sunil Gavaskar, the former captain of India, went one step further and declared that Gill has solidified his position as Rohit Sharma’s opener partner for the foreseeable future across all forms, not just the Test Championship final.
What did Sunil Gavaskar say about young opener Shubman Gill?
Sunil Gavaskar, while speaking on Sports Tak, discussed Gill as the permanent opener for Team India. He said, “He’s only 23, he’s young and with the kind of form he has shown in pretty much all the formats, scoring centuries in ODis, T20Is and Test, it appears that Rohit Sharma’s partner for the next few years is sealed.”
Shubman Gill will be available for the three-match ODI series against Australia, beginning on March 17 in Mumbai. He is likely to start the game along with Mumbai opener Ishan Kishan. Hardik Pandya will captain India because regular skipper Rohit Sharma will miss the series opener owing to personal obligations.
With a stunning exhibition of enormous runs over the past two years, Gill has transformed himself into an ODI beast. He even made history by scoring an ODI double century and becoming the youngest person to do so. Even in T20Is, the same form carried through.
