‘T20 aur odi hi thik he inke liye’- Fans reacts as Bangladesh register in 21st centuries largest win in one-off Test against Afghanistan

Bangladesh defeated their Asian opponent Afghanistan by a margin of 546 runs in their one-off Test match, setting a record that will most certainly stand for years. This 546-run victory was the third-most margin of runs for a Test-playing country and the largest margin of runs in this century. This is also the largest win for an Asian team in this fashion.

While chasing a 662-run target, the Afghan openers went back early, with Ibrahim Zadran and Abdul Malik dismissed with fewer than 10 runs on the board at the end of Day 3. Hashmatullah Shahidi, who had retired injured the day before, was replaced as a concussion substitution during the pursuit by Bahir Shah.

Bangladesh register the largest win in the 21st century

Bangladesh did not make a mistake when Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi chose to bat first on day one of the Test at Mirpur. The Tigers produced 382 runs in their first innings, headed by a century from Najmul Hossain Shanto (146) and a half-century from Mahmudul Hasan Joy (76). Afghanistan could only score 146 runs in response, with Afsar Zazai scoring 36. Ebadot Hossain (4/47) and Shoriful Islam (2/28) of Bangladesh claimed important top-order wickets.

England has the largest margin of victory (in terms of runs). In 1928, they defeated Australia by 675 runs. Australia is second, with a 562-run victory against England in 1934.

Bangladesh’s aggressive batting in their second innings, with Shanto again scoring 124 runs, and Mominul Haque scoring an unbeaten 121, got support from Zakir Hasan (71) and Litton Das (66*) all contributed to their side declaring at 425/4 in just 80 overs. With this, they set a massive target of 662 runs for their opponents.

Chasing the target, the Afghans were even worse in their second innings with the bat and were bowled out for merely 115. Bangladesh charged off with their led by their pacers, Taskin Ahmed (4/37) and Islam (3/28). Rahmat Shah was the only batter who could cross the 20-run mark. Karim Janat scoring 18 runs and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi scoring 13 runs, were the two other batters who touched double digits.

Najmul Hossain Shanto was named Player of the Match after scoring 146 runs in the first and 124 runs in the second innings, respectively.
