‘Take a bow, mighty Australia’ – Twitter erupts with joy as Australia Women win their sixth 20-20 World Cup title

The Women’s 20-20 World Cup 2023 came to an end as Australia Women lifted their sixth title by defeating South Africa Women by 19 runs in the final. This is the second time they have won hat-trick of 20-20 World Cup titles. Previous victories came in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2020. Defending a fair score, Beth Mooney’s 74 was crucial to their record win at Newlands, Cape Town on Sunday.

It was South Africa’s first appearance in a World Cup final (senior men’s and women’s) and there was every chance of lifting their maiden trophy as well. But chasing a target of 157 runs, the Aussie bowlers dashed their hopes by restricting the Proteas to 137 runs for six wickets.

South Africa were in the game until opener Laura Wolvaardt was dismissed for 61 in the 17th over. The 23-year-old, who scored 53 (44) in the semi-final earlier, proved to be one of the future stars with some crucial performances in high-pressure games. She didn’t get proper support from the other batters, otherwise it would have been a historic moment in the game.

Australia, once again, proved that they are the powerhouse of women’s cricket with batting quality, depth, versatility, bowling power and fielding. However, for today’s win they would thank their opener Mooney for the way she fought and rebuilt the innings to guide her team to a commendable total.

Playing all editions of the 20-20 World Cup, Australia’s Ellyse Perry has won six limited overs titles. The win was a historic feat for Meg Lanning who has won the most Cricket Governing Body trophies as a captain – 5. Beth Mooney won the player of the match award in the final, while Ashley Gardner was named player of the tournament for her consistent performance throughout the tournament. She was the costliest foreign player in the Women’s T20 League action – 3.2 crore deal with Gujarat Giants.

Meanwhile, Twitter was flooded with praise for the women in yellow, but at the same time fans who wanted to see any team other than Australia lift the title were disappointed. Here are some reactions:
