Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is celebrating his 74th Birthday today July 10th, 2023. The Indian batting legend is among the best cricketers who ever played for India. He earned the spotlight from his Test debut against the mighty West Indies in March 1971, where he announced his arrival with the scores of 65 and 67 not out in both both innings as India registered a 7-wickets to take 1-0 lead with three matches remaining.

In the very next game, Gavaskar scored his maiden ton as he with 116 and 64 not out to help India draw the game. He amassed 774 runs in his debut series against the Windies that are still the most by anyone in their maiden series. Well, this is not the only record Gavaskar made in his career. Also known as the Little Master, Gavaskar has so many outstanding and memorable achievements that we are going to discuss in this article.

First cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs

Gavaskar is the first evet cricketer in international cricket to accumulate 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He achieved this feat in March 1987. He scored runs against the bowlers like Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Jeff Thompson and Denis Lillee. He has scored 10,122 runs in the longest format of the game before retiring.

34 Test tons

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most centuries in Test cricket with 51 to his name. However, before him, Gavaskar held the record for most number of Test hundreds. In his 125 appearances, Gavaskar has amassed 34 Test tons and his records remained unbeaten till 2005 before Tendulkar took over him. Even after so many years of his retirement, he still stands in the position in the list of most hundreds by Indians in Test cricket.

Apart from all these records, Gavaskar was also part of the Indian team that were crowned the World Champions for the first time in 1983. India defeated the mighty West Indies in the final at the historic Lords Cricket Ground. However, there was not much contribution from Gavaskar’s bat, but this came as a cherry on top on his memorable.
