‘The Modern day Legend’ – Fan celebrate as Ben Stokes wins Test Cricketer of the year award

England Test skipper Ben Stokes has won the Test cricketer of the year award. He took over the Test captaincy after Joe Root resigned in May last year. Before this, the right-hander, Root had a forgettable time as Test captain from February 2021 to March last year. During this phase, they won only two games, both against India. However, they lost the Ashes and a Test series against West Indies and India.

However, since Stokes has taken, they are yet to lose more than one Test since June last year. That loss came against South Africa. In the series against New Zealand and Pakistan, the Three Lions cleanly swept them both. Not to forget, this was the first time when the Asian side was cleanly swept at home. This has been a complete transformation for the team under him.

Talking about his batting, the left-hander amassed 870 runs including two centuries.

England registered the highest team total in a single day of a Test match

As far as captaincy is concerned, the New Zealand-born Stokes has been complimented by Test head coach Brendon McCullum. Both have come up with a plan of playing red-ball cricket in one of the most unconventional ways. That proved instrumental in the three-match test series against Pakistan.

Not to forget, the pitches for all three games were docile, and producing a result (win or lose) was an art in itself. In the first Test, the former World Number Side won the toss and batted first. On the first day of the game, the Ben Stokes-led side amassed 506/4 with four players scoring a hundred. For the record, this was the first time a team scored 500 runs on the first day of the game. Meanwhile, the fans are celebrating Stokes winning the award.
