‘Third umpire should have seen little more replays’ – Rohit Sharma expresses disappointment with third umpire over Shubman Gill’s controversial wicket

The Indian team lost their second World Test Championship final in a row as Australia was crowned the champions at The Oval. The team led by Rohit Sharma faced a massive 209-run loss while chasing a mammoth target of 444 runs.

The Indian team needed a good start, which Rohit and Shubman Gillgot, in what could have been a historic chase in Test Cricket’s history. However, Gill’s controversial dismissal was a big upset for India. Scott Boland delivered an excellent length ball around the off stump with all his strength. Gill looked to defend the ball, but it bounced and took the bat’s shoulder, flying to Cameron Green at gully. The ball flew low to his left, but he was quick to complete the catch.

Following Green’s catch, the on-field umpires conferred before referring to the third umpire to determine the validity of the catch. He stated that the fingers were clearly under the ball after reviewing some clips. This marked the end of Gill’s innings.

After the game, Rohit expressed his thoughts, saying he was perplexed as to why there were no replays or zoomed angles to make an informed decision. “I just felt disappointed. I mean the third umpire should have seen little more replays a little more of how the catch is being held. I think it was three or four times he saw and he was convinced. It’s not about whether it was given out or not out. You need to have proper and clear information about anything. Not just about the catch. That is something I was a little disappointed with,” Rohit said during the post-match conference.
