‘Wasn’t concerned about..’ – Sunil Gavaskar makes huge statement on Shreyas Iyer after his performance vs Sri Lanka

Shreyas Iyer roared back to form with a sizzling 82 runs versus Sri Lanka on Thursday. The crucial knock came in front of his home crowd in Mumbai helping India win the game by 302 runs. Former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has made a huge statement on Shreyas Iyer after his match winning knock.

Sunil Gavaskar made some rather hard hitting observations about the 28-year-old Indian batting star. The comments came at the end of the game versus Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup 2023 which saw India qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

The Indian cricket team is set to take on South Africa on Sunday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. If India goes on to win the game they will qualify for the final-four stage as the number 1 placed side in the points table.

Sunil Gavaskar impressed with Shreyas Iyer’s approach –

Former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for Shreyas Iyer at the end of the India versus Sri Lanka ODI World Cup 2023 game. The 74-year-old loved the approach shown by Shreyas Iyer during his 82-run knock.

Sunil Gavaskar said “I think Nasser mentioned that earlier that he wasn’t playing for his place in the team. He was looking to get the scoreboard ticking, he was looking to play the big shots. So, he really wasn’t concerned about himself, you know? Yes, there were question marks about his place in the team, but he just put them to rest because kind of number he bats at. He will get to 80 quickly,”

Shreyas Iyer has time and again had problems against short-pitched bowling and Sunil Gavaskar asked the 28-year-old to work on this aspect. “He just needs to at maybe, at some stage at the start. Maybe just be a little careful about his shot selection. Otherwise, you know that’s the reason why he’s at number four and not Rahul. who is at five”

Former New Zealand pacer turned commentator Simon Doull also agreed with what Sunil Gavaskar had to say. The Kiwi said “Shreyas Iyer has amazing clarity over his role. You are going to get some performances that are high and you are going to get some low ones. Iyer plays the high-risk shots, plays high-risk cricket because he wants to score at a high strike rate, and I think that he is quite comfortable playing that role”
