Erin Burns’ gravity-defying fielding heroics steal the show in Sixers vs. Scorchers Clash
In response, the Sixers got off to a great start as the openers, Suzie Bates and Ellyse Perry shared a 52-run stand but the rest of the batters could not capitalize on the solid foundation. The Sixers eventually ended up with just 130, 36 short of the Scorchers’ total. Amy Edgar, with figures of 4-19, was the pick of the bowlers. Alana King and Sophie Devine were also good on the day as they picked up two wickets apiece. King was adjudged the player of the match for her all-round contributions which heavily influenced the game.
However, the standout moment of the game was in the 20th and final over of the first innings when Alana King was on strike against Ashleigh Gardner. Gardner bowled a delivery wide outside the off-stump, and King slog-swept it towards the deep mid-wicket boundary. Erin Burns, stationed just inside the rope, leapt into the air and plucked the ball out of the sky. She realized she was about to cross the boundary, so she flung the ball up over her head. Just as Burns stepped back into the field of play after crossing the boundary, she realized she had not thrown the ball in. She threw herself full-length and got hold of the ball before throwing it back. The ball landed safely inside the playing field, and Burns quickly picked it up and threw it back to the bowler, eventually saving four runs for the team.
Burns’ sensational effort and commitment earned her a lot of praise from fans and pundits alike with many declaring it as one of the best fielding efforts of all time.
