WATCH: South Africa allrounder Keshav Maharaj suffers injury while celebrating Kyle Mayers’ wicket in 2nd Test Vs West Indies

South African allrounder Keshav Maharaj needs surgery and will be out of cricket for a long period of time after rupturing the achilles tendon in his left heel which he sustained while celebrating after a wicket in the second Test against West Indies on Saturday. “Maharaj sustained a “complete rupture” of the tendon and will meet with a surgeon on Monday,” stated Cricket South Africa.

Maharaj suffered a strange injury that required him to be taken off the Wanderers field on a stretcher just minutes after he took his second wicket in South Africa’s 284-run victory. Later, he returned back to the field and was seen using crutches.

Maharaj appealed for leg before wicket (LBW) against Kyle Mayers and the umpire gave him not out. After that, the Proteas side took a review and the on-field decision was reversed. During the celebration, the left-arm spinner celebrated by raising both of his hands. He moved a step forward during the celebration, and then he suddenly fall on the ground holding his left leg.

Before the doctors arrived, his teammates who were all waiting next to him in a huddle for the review decision attempted to help as he lied on his stomach screaming in pain. The South African spinner finished his spell after bowling just 2.5 overs in which he took two wickets and conceded only four runs.

Maharaj missed most of the second innings of the game, but South Africa didn’t have much of an issue, as they bowled out the visitors for 106 runs in 35.1 overs to win the second and final Test of the series by 284 runs and -clean-sweep the series 2-0.

Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma was awarded the Player of the Match for his marvellous century in the second innings of the Test match where he scored 172 runs off 280 balls which included 20 boundaries, and Aiden Markram was awarded the Player of the series award for his brilliant performance with bat in both the Tests.
