‘We should not create a dispute’ – Indian Cricket Board official gives firm message to Shubman Gill’s social media post over umpiring decision in WTC final

In the final of the World Test Championship 2021-23 India faced Australia at the iconic Kennington Oval. After declaring for 270/8 on Day 4 Australia set the mammoth target of 444 runs for the Indian team. India started well and added 41 runs off 43 balls for the first wicket. However, a controversial decision from a TV umpire dismissed Shubman Gill which created a stir on social media.

Reacting on the same Gill also posted a social media post by uploading the pictures of the catch. Gill captioned the pictures with emoticons of magnifying glasses. Meanwhile, a senior official of the Indian cricket board indirectly warned Shubman Gill to refrain from creating any dispute over the decision. While talking with the media former board president Rajiv Shukla said, “We should not create a dispute over this. We should accept the decision of the Third umpire.”

Notably, it happened in the eighth over of India’s second innings when Gill nicked the ball which went to Cameron Green in the slip. To execute the catch, the Australian all-rounder had to dive to his left. However, Gill remained at the crease while the umpire went upstairs for a review. Even though images of the ball striking the grass went viral on social media, the TV Umpire ruled that the catch was legal.

India had a poor first hour on Day 5

On Day 5 India needed a partnership when set batter Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane was batting. India needed 280 runs to win the trophy but the batters failed to put up a show. Kohli added 5 runs to his overnight score and was dismissed by Boland for 49 runs. In the same over India lost allrounder Ravindra Jadeja who nibbed out to register a two-ball duck.

India needs a miracle to clinch this game or to even draw it from here. On the other hand, Australia just needs five more wickets to become the first team with all Multinational trophies in their cabinet. For Australia Scott Boland has been phenomenal in the second innings. He has clinched three out of five wickets till the first hour of day 5.
