‘World Cup me to Vijay Shankar hi khelega’ – Fans react as Shreyas Iyer unlikely to recover ahead of Asia Cup 2023

Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to recover from his back injury before the 2023 Asia Cup that is scheduled to take place in September. The 28-year-old sustained a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 earlier this year. Since then, he is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru following a back surgery in April which made him ruled out of the entire season of IPL 2023.

Iyer also hasn’t been included in the Indian squad for the upcoming tour to West Indies. Now according to the reports by Times of India, he is unlikely to get featured in the upcoming Asian tournament. This also makes him uncertain for One-Day World Cup in India later in the year. “Iyer recently took an injection for his back pain at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy. His back is still giving him trouble,” a source told TOI.

Surykumar Yadav looking to grab the opportunity in Iyer’s absence

Now with Iyer missing out on the West Indies tour, all eyes will be on Suryakumar Yadav heading into the upcoming ODI series ahead of the World Cup. Suryakumar is World’s number 1 batter in T20Is. However, his numbers haven’t been that great in the 50-over format. The 32-year-old had a disastrous outing in the previous series against Australia as he scored three-consecutive golden ducks in a three-match series.

However, he regained his form in IPL 2023 as he amassed 603 runs in 16 matches for Mumbai Indians averaging at 43.21, with five half-centuries and a Hundred. The right-handed batter still had to prove his worth in ODIs and it could be a great chance for him in the upcoming series against the Caribbean side. On the other hand, the upcoming series could also be a great opportunity for the wicketkeeper batters like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan with Rishabh Pant being out of action.

India’s ODI squad against West Indies:

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar.
