‘You only get a few of these moments’ – Pat Cummins shares his thoughts after leading Australia to WTC glory ahead of Ashes

Australia skipper Pat Cummins finally spoke after winning the World Test Championship final against India at the Oval on Sunday. Speaking ahead of the Ashes series against England, Cummins said that the preparations for the upcoming Test series can wait and the team wishes to acknowledge the current moments of winning the championship.

Notably, Australia dominated India throughout the Test match and registered a big victory by 209 runs to win the second edition of the WTC final. However, in a few days, the Aussies will be taking on the arch-rivals England for the Ashes starting on June 16th.

“I think we’ll sit around in the changing rooms for a while and then we’ll find a nice sunny English beer garden somewhere probably this afternoon to sit back and celebrate. It’s been an amazing two years. We’ve had this final in the diary for a while. It’s been something that we’ve been building up for so it’s something we’re going to savour,” said Cummins as quoted by Rediff.com.

“I know we’ve got a big series but we can worry about that in a couple days’ time. You only get a few of these moments in your career where you can sit back, acknowledge a pretty special achievement and that’s one of these times,” said the Australian captain after the big win over India,” he further added.

Talking about the match summary, after being asked to bat first, Australia posted a total of 469 runs in their first innings, powered by the centuries by Steve Smith (121 runs) and Marnus Labuschagne (164 runs). In reply, India could only reach to 296 runs as Ajinkya Rahane turned out to be the top scorer for the team. Playing his comeback match, Rahane got out after scoring 89 runs off 129 balls, while Shardul Thakur also went on to score his third consecutive fifty at the Oval.

After getting a big first-innings lead, Australia declared their second innings 270 runs for the loss of 8 wickets giving India a mammoth target of 444 runs. Alex Carey top-scored 66 runs off 105 balls. Chasing the winning total, India lost early wickets as the score was reduced to 93 for 3. After that Kohli and Rahane put up a partnership of 86 runs for the fourth wicket. However, after the partnership was broken, the Australian bowlers didn’t take much time to take the rest of the wickets as India lost their 7 wickets for 70 runs on Day 5 and were bowled out for 234 runs.
