‘Zero cares for tinpot franchise’ – Fans react as MSK Prasad named Lucknow Super Giants’ Strategic Consultant for IPL 2024

MSK Prasad, the former Indian selector, is set to join the camp of Lucknow Super Giants as the Strategic Consultant for the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League. The former Indian cricketer was the chairman of the selection committee of Indian cricket in 2019. The Indian squad for the prestigious 2019 ODI World Cup was picked under the guidance of MSK Prasad.

The squad which was picked by MSK Prasad was controversial due to the inclusion of Vijay Shankar over Ambati Rayudu. The 48-year-old played a few games for the Indian team during the late 1990s. In 6 matches for India, Prasad scored 106 runs, at a batting average of 11.8, at a batting strike rate of 28.6 in the longest format of the game.

Prasad also played One Day Internationals for India. In 17 matches, Prasad scored 131 runs at a batting average of 14.6, at a batting strike rate of 58.2. In First Class cricket, Prasad played 96 matches and scored 4021 runs at a batting average of 27.7. The Andhra Pradesh cricketer is known more for his involvement in governing bodies, than as a cricketer.

Tenure as the chairman of selectors in Indian cricket

On 21st September 2016, Prasad was selected as the Chief National Selector of the Indian cricket team. The tenure of the former Indian cricketer came to an end on 4th March 2020. As Lucknow Super Giants approached the former Indian cricketer for the role of the Strategic consultant of the team for the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League, Prasad accepted the role wholeheartedly.

In their last two seasons, Super Giants have been one of the best teams in the Indian Premier League. In the 2022 and 2023 seasons of IPL, LSG qualified for the playoffs and lost the Eliminator matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, respectively. With the older contracts of the coaching staff and other staff coming to an end, LSG opted for fresh faces in their dugout for the upcoming season. It is to be seen how much of an impact Prasad can have in his new role.
