‘Agle Janam mohe Australia hi kijo’ – Fans react as Australia crush India by 209 runs in WTC 2023 final at The Oval
In the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 Australia beat India by 209 runs to become the first team to clinch all major multinational trophies. On the last day of the game, Indian batting collapsed against Australian bowlers and got bundled up within a session. India scored just 234 runs in the 4th innings and failed to clinch the Mace.
Earlier, On the first day, India won the toss and chose to bowl first. They dropped Ravichandran Ashwin from the starting XI in favour of a seam-heavy attack. Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj made early inroads, dismissing Khawaja for a duck, while Warner and Labuschagne got off to a slow start and were dismissed before lunch. Travis Head, on the other hand, counter-attacked superbly and scored a fantastic century, forging an important partnership with Steve Smith.
On the second day, Smith completed his century and Head crossed the 150 runs mark. Despite India’s superior bowling, Australia managed to produce a big total of 469 runs. In response, India’s top four batters were dismissed cheaply by Australian pacers, putting the team in jeopardy. The innings were then stabilised by Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja’s vital partnership. Jadeja after playing a crucial knock got dismissed by Nathan Lyon.
On Day 3 Bharat was dismissed early, but Australia squandered opportunities to strengthen their grip on the match. India avoided the follow-on thanks to a century partnership between Rahane and Shardul Thakur. Rahane fell short of a century, but Thakur hit 50 as Australia took a 173-run advantage. India bowled excellent control, taking four wickets to stay in the game.
India failed to chase 280 runs on the last day
On the fourth day of the game, India started well with the ball and clinched some quick breakthroughs. However, Alex Carrey and Mitchell Starc batted brilliantly and scored half-centuries. Australia declared and asked India to chase a massive total of 444 runs. India skipper Rohit Sharma and opener Shubman Gill got things going quickly.
However, Gill departed after a controversial decision by a TV umpire as Cameron Green took a sensational catch. After that, Both Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara added 51 runs for the second wicket before blowing away their starts. Later former India skipper Virat Kohli and Rahane batted brilliantly, putting on a fifty-run stand and extending the contest to the final day.
On the final day, India required 280 runs in three sessions while Australia needed seven wickets. India failed to hold nerves as both Rahane and Kohli threw their wickets. Jadeja scored a two-ball duck and tail-enders tried to reduce the deficit. India didn’t even survive a session and got bundled up for 234 runs.
